Surely God is my salvation; I will trust, and will not be afraid;

For the LORD GOD is my strength and my might.

With joy you will draw water from the wells of salvation. And you will say in that day:

Give thanks to the LORD, call on his name; make known God’s deeds among the nations.

Sing praises to the LORD, for he has done gloriously; let this be known in all the earth.

Shout aloud and sing for joy, for the great God is in our midst!

* HYMN No. 517    The Solid Rock

* PRAYER OF CONFESSION

God of life, we come to you as a people hungry for good news. We have been so dead to your work among us that we have missed you making all things new. We have preoccupied ourselves with pleasures and have overlooked the joy you offer us. We have been so concerned with making a living that we have missed the life you set among us. Forgive us, gracious God. Open our lips and hands to share your gift with all humanity in the name of our Savior, Jesus Christ. Amen.

Ev’rywhere I go, the Lord is near me, If I call upon Him, He will hear me, Never will I fear, for the Lord is near ev’rywhere I go.

In the dark of night should things alarm me, Ever in His sight, no ill may harm me, I will be of cheer for the Lord is near, ev’rywhere I go.

He is with me day by day, He will be my strength and stay; From His path I will not stray but follow in His way.

In the coming days of joy or sadness I will praise His name with songs of gladness, For to me it’s clear that the Lord is near ev’rywhere I go.

 (For to me it’s clear that the Lord is near ev’rywhere I go.)

Ev’rywhere God is there, Tending all with loving care, He is near me ev’rywhere I go.

Dark of night, morning light, I am ever in His sight; He will keep me safe from harm I know.

Day by day my strength and stay, I will follow in His way.

All my days I will raise to His name glad songs of praise, For the Lord is ev’rywhere I go. For the Lord is ev’rywhere I go.

* CALL TO WORSHIP        Elizabeth Mahowald

You are righteous, O LORD, and your judgments are right.

You have appointed your decrees in righteousness and in all faithfulness.

I am small and despised, yet I do not forget your precepts.

Your righteousness is an everlasting righteousness, and your law is the truth.

Trouble and anguish have come upon me, but your commandments are my delight.

Your decrees are righteous forever; give me understanding that I may live.

* HYMN No. 2    Holy, Holy, Holy! Lord God Almighty

* PRAYER OF CONFESSION

In you, O Lord, we know our transgressions are forgiven. In you, we know you are fair and just in your judgments. Yet so often, we hide from you, not wanting to admit the ways we are living or the harm we are causing. We hide from your presence seeking to cover our sins. But our souls long for you and your forgiveness. Satisfy our yearnings; wash us clean from our sin; release us from our shame; that we might live for you and your kingdom.  Amen.

Won't you come down, Lord; Dwell among us today. Come down, Lord; Send your spirit, O Lord, today. We are in your loving family, We are one in heart and soul; We rejoice in your salvation, for your word has made us whole. * CONFESSION OF FAITH:        Based on Heidelberg Catechism Q&A 21

True faith is not only a sure knowledge by which I hold as true all that God has revealed to us in Scripture; it is also a wholehearted trust, which the Holy Spirit creates in me by the gospel, that God has freely granted, not only to others but to me also, forgiveness of sins, eternal righteousness, and salvation. These are gifts of sheer grace, granted solely by Christ’s merit.

How lovely is your dwelling place, O LORD of hosts!

My soul longs for the courts of the LORD; my heart and my flesh sing for joy to the living God.

Blessed are those whose strength is in you, in whose heart are the highways to Zion.

* PRAYER OF CONFESSION

Merciful God, you pardon all who truly repent and turn to you. We humbly confess our sins and ask your mercy. We have not loved you with a pure heart, nor have we loved our neighbor as ourselves. We have not done justice, loved kindness, or walked humbly with you, our God. Have mercy on us, O God, in your loving-kindness. In your great compassion, cleanse us from our sin. Restore to us the joy of your salvation and sustain us with your bountiful Spirit through Jesus Christ, our Lord.  Amen.

ANTHEM:      Requiem    Eliza Gilkyson

Blessed Jesus, full of grace, awaken. All our homes are gone, our loved ones taken. Taken by the sea - Blessed Jesus, calm our fears, have mercy. Drowning in a sea of tears, have mercy. Hear our mournful plea. Our world has been shaken, we wander our homelands, forsaken.

In the dark night of the soul, bring some comfort to us all - Oh, blessed Jesus, come and carry us in your embrace; that our sorrows may be faced.

Jesus, fill the glass to overflowing. Illuminate the path where we are going. Have mercy on us all. In funeral fires burning, each flame to your mystery, returning.

In the dark night of the soul, your shattered dreamers, make them whole - Oh, blessed Jesus, help us to behold your gentle face, lead us to a higher place.

In the dark night of the soul, our broken hearts you can make whole - Oh, blessed Jesus, come and carry us in your embrace; let us see your gentle face, Jesus.

OFFERING OURSELVES AND OUR GIFTS

         Offertory Anthem:            Lord, It Belongs Not to My Care    Carl Schalk

Lord, it belongs not to my care whether I die or live; to love and serve thee is my share, and this thy grace must give. If life be long, O make me glad the longer to obey; if short, no laborer is sad to end his toilsome day. Christ leads me through no darker rooms than he went through before; he that unto God's kingdom comes must enter by this door. Come, Lord, when grace hath made me meet thy blessed face to see: for if thy work on earth be sweet, what will thy glory be! Then I shall end my sad complaints and weary sinful days, and join with the triumphant saints that sing my Savior's praise. My knowledge of that life is small, the eye of faith is dim; but 'tis enough that Christ knows all, and I shall be with him.
