SALUTATION AND ANNOUNCEMENTS

* PASSING OF THE PEACE

* SANCTUS (pew card)

* CALL TO WORSHIP        Connie Thorsen

Praise the LORD! I will give thanks to the LORD with my whole heart, in the company of the upright, in the congregation.

Great are the works of the LORD, studied by all who delight in them.

Full of honor and majesty is God’s work, and his righteousness endures forever.

The works of God’s hands are faithful and just; all his precepts are trustworthy.

They are established forever and ever, to be performed with faithfulness and uprightness.

The fear of the LORD is the beginning of wisdom; all those who practice it have a good understanding. His praise endures forever.

* HYMN No. 328    God's Holy Ways Are Just and True

* PRAYER OF CONFESSION

God of love and justice, we long for peace within and peace without. We long for harmony in our families and for serenity in the midst of struggle. We long for the day when our world will be a dwelling place for your love. Yet we confess that we are often anxious, we do not trust each other, and we harbor resentment and violence. We are not willing to take the risks and make the sacrifices that love requires. Look upon us with kindness and grace. Rule in our homes and in all the world; show us how to walk in your paths, through themercy of our Savior.  Amen.

CALL TO WORSHIP        Jim Nicholas

      Praise the Lord; praise God, O my soul. Let us praise God as long as we live.

      God has heard our cries; God has seen our tears; God has prepared for us a rich               banquet at his table.

      God satisfies us in the morning with steadfast love, that we may rejoice and be glad all our       days.

      As we participate in the Spirit, our selfish conceits give way to unity: for we are one       in the Spirit; one in the Lord.

      Let us join together with the church universal to worship God with joy and praise, knowing       our salvation is in Christ.

* HYMN No. 216    Beneath the Cross of Jesus

* PRAYER OF CONFESSION

Merciful God, we confess that we have sinned against you in thought, word, and deed, by what we have done, and by what we have left undone.  We have not loved you with our whole heart and mind and strength.  We have not loved our neighbors as ourselves.  In your mercy forgive what we have been, help us amend what we are, and direct what we shall be, so that we may delight in your will and walk in your ways, to the glory of your holy name.  Through Christ, our Lord. Amen.

We thank KATHRYN SCHNEIDER for serving as our organist today. Kathy grew up at Church on the Hill, where her mother, Phyllis, sang in the choirs for more than 60 years.  She was organist at Queensboro Hill Community Church and then Assistant University Organist at Columbia University.  She is currently a lawyer for a NYC tech company as well as the longtime musical director and conductor of the 85+-voice New York City Bar Chorus, which demonstrates the kinder side of legal professionals through its hundreds of performances in community outreach venues (including several at nearby Ozanam Hall).   This past summer, Kathy was on the conducting team for "the public domain," a world premiere mass-choral work for the Mostly Mozart 50 celebration staged in Lincoln Center Plaza. She was one of Andrew Andela's regular substitute at Church on the Hill and is delighted to return to the console this morning.
