ORDER FOR WORSHIP

PRELUDE: Prelude and Fugue in D Major J.S. Bach

SALUTATION AND ANNOUNCEMENTS

* PASSING OF THE PEACE

* SANCTUS (pew card)

* CALL TO WORSHIP Emerson Chen

Holy Spirit, Lord and giver of life:
At the beginning of time you moved over the face of the
waters; you gave every living thing the breath of life.
Come, Creator Spirit, and renew the whole creation.
Holy Spirit, voice of the prophets:
You enflame men and women with a passion for your truth,
and through them you call your people to the ways of justice
and compassion.
Come, Spirit of righteousness, and burn in our hearts.
Holy Spirit, Advocate, Teacher:
You speak to us of our Lord and show us the depth of his love.
Come, Spirit of truth, abide in us and lead us in the way of
Jesus Christ.

* HYMN No. 289 Holy Spirit, Ever Dwelling

PRAYER OF CONFESSION

Gracious God, who pours out freely the gift of your Holy Spirit:
we confess before you and to each other
that we have failed to recognize this most precious gift.
We have been satisfied with ordinary things,
suspicious of unfamiliar things, and blind to spiritual things.
Cleanse us, O God, and burn away our presumptuous self-
sufficiency.
Open us in faith to receive the renewing touch of your
hand.
(Prayers of Silent Confession)

Kyrie (sung):  Lord, have mercy. Lord, have mercy.
Christ, have mercy. Christ, have mercy.
Lord, have mercy. Lord, have mercy.

ASSURANCE OF PARDON/WISDOM FOR LIFE

God, who is rich in mercy, out of the great love with which he
loved us, made us alive together with Christ.
By grace we have been saved!
For we are created in Christ Jesus for good works, which God
prepared beforehand to be our way of life.
Glory be to the Father, to the Son, and to the Holy Spirit!

JUNIOR SERMON

ANTHEM:                Dona Nobis (from the B-minor Mass)                J.S. Bach

your Holy Spirit. May the work begun by the Spirit on the day of

will. Amen.

Acts 2:1-4, 16-21 p. 885

This is the Word of the Lord.

SERMON:                  A Community of God’s Spirit                 Rev. Blaine Crawford

* CONFESSION OF FAITH:

From Heidelberg Catechism, Q&A’s 49, 51, 53

By the Spirit’s power we make the goal of our lives not
earthly things but the things above where Christ is, sitting
at God’s right hand. Through the Holy Spirit Christ pours
out his gifts from heaven upon us his members. The Spirit,
as well as the Father and the Son, is eternal God. The
Spirit has been given to us personally so that by true faith
the Spirit makes us share in Christ and all his blessings,
comforts us, and remains with us forever.

OFFERING OURSELVES AND OUR GIFTS
     Offertory:   Ian Douglass Mitchell               O Love That Will Not Let Me Go

O love that will not let me go,
I rest my weary soul in thee;
I give thee back the life I owe,

That in thine ocean's depths
Its flow may richer, fuller be.
O light that follows all my way,
I yield my flickering torch to thee;
My heart restores its borrowed ray,
That in thy sunshine's glow
Its day may brighter, fairer be.
Joy that seeks me through the pain,
I cannot close my heart to thee;
I trace the rainbow through the rain,
And feel the promise is not vain
That morning shall tearless be.
O Cross that raises up my head,
I dare not ask to fly from thee;
I lay in dust life's glory dead,
And from the ground there blossoms red,
Life that shall endless be.
Amen.

* The Doxology (pew card)

* Prayer of Dedication

* HYMN No. 285 For Your Gift of God the Spirit

* BENEDICTION

Response: The Lord Bless You and Keep You

The Lord bless you and keep you.

and give you peace.
The Lord make his face to shine upon you,
and be gracious unto you.
Amen.

SERMON                      A Community of Testimony                Rev. Blaine Crawford

* CONFESSION OF FAITH:

Belgic Confession, Article 29

As for those who can belong to the church, we can recognize
them by the distinguishing marks of Christians:
namely by faith, and by their fleeing from sin and pursuing
righteousness, once they have received the one and only
Savior, Jesus Christ. They love the true God and their
neighbors, without turning to the right or left, and they
crucify the flesh and its works. Though great weakness
remains in them, they fight against it by the Spirit all the
days of their lives, appealing constantly to the blood,
suffering, death, and obedience of the Lord Jesus.

OFFERING OURSELVES AND OUR GIFTS
     Offertory:        Ave Maria         Jacques Arcadelt

(Translation)

Hail Mary, full of grace,
The Lord is with thee.
Blessed art thou among women,

Thy womb, Jesus.
Holy Mary, Mother of God,
Pray for us sinners,
Now, and at the hour of our death,
Amen.

In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God.

All things came into being through him; what has come into being in him was life.

The glory as the father’s only son, full of grace and truth.

The life was the light of all people.

The Word is God’s gift to the world.

for everything that spoils our witness for you;

that we so often deny with our lives

what we say with our lips;

for the difference between our creed and our conduct,

our profession and our practice;

for any example that makes it easier for people to criticize your church or for another to sin.

(Prayers of Silent Confession)

Yea, though I walk through

the valley of the shadow of death

I will fear no evil;

for Thou art with me

Thou preparest a table before me

in the presence of my enemies:

Thou anointest my head with oil;

my cup runneth over

Surely goodness and mercy

Shall follow me all the days of my life;

And I will dwell in the house of the Lord Forever.
