Christmas Eve Lessons and Carols

ORDER FOR WORSHIP

A Service of Lessons and Carols

The service of Lessons and Carols was developed in the late nineteenth century and first used at King’s College Chapel in Cambridge, UK. The service is a re-telling of the story of the coming Christ. It follows a simple pattern: each lesson is told through a song and a Scripture reading. May you hear anew the story of the birth of Jesus as we listen, sing, and worship God this evening.

PRELUDE:             O Come, O Come Emmanuel

WELCOME & PRAYER OF INVOCATION

CHORAL CALL TO WORSHIP

          O Magnum Mysterium                Morton Lauridson

O great mystery,

and wonderful sacrament,

that animals should see the new-born Lord,

lying in a manger!

Blessed is the Virgin whose womb

was worthy to bear

our Saviour, Jesus Christ.

Alleluia!

ADVENT CANDLE LIGHTING                                              Ray Durney

Jesus said, “I am the light of the world; the one who follows me will not walk in darkness but have the light of life.”

We light this candle as a sign of the coming light of Christ.

“Arise, shine; for your light has come,

and the glory of the LORD has risen upon you.

For the darkness shall cover the earth,

and thick darkness the peoples;

but the LORD will arise upon you,

and his glory will appear over you.

Nations shall come to your light,

and kings to the brightness of your dawn.” (Isaiah 60:1-3)

We welcome you, Lord Jesus, our light and our salvation.

Let us walk in the light of the Lord.

FOURTH LESSON

Luke 1:46-56

Anthem :     Love Came Down at Christmas John Carter

Love came down at Christmas,

Love all lovely, love divine;

Love was born at Christmas,

Star and angels gave the sign.

Worship we the Godhead,

Love incarnate, love divine;

Worship we our Jesus:

But wherewith for sacred sign?

Love shall be our token,

Love be yours and love be mine,

Love to God and all men,

Love for plea and gift and sign.

Love came down at Christmas,

Love all lovely, love divine.

FIFTH LESSON

Micah 5:2-5a

*Hymn #155                           O Little Town of Bethlehem

Luke 2:1, 4-7

Duet:                   A Welsh tune, text by Sir Harold Boulton

                           All Throughout the Night

                           Maureen and Emerson Chen

Sleep, my child, and peace attend thee all through the night.

Guardian angels God will send thee all through the night.

Soft and drowsy hours are creeping,

Hill and vale in slumber steeping,

I my loving vigil keeping, all through the night.

While the moon her watch is keeping all through the night.

While the weary world is sleeping all through the night.

O'er spirit gently stealing, visions of delight revealing,

Breathes a rare and holy feeling all through the night.

SEVENTH LESSON

Luke 2:8-14

Anthem:                  Christmas Lullaby             John Rutter

Clear in the darkness a light shines in Bethlehem:

Angels are singing their sounds fill the air.

Wise men have journeyed to greet their messiah;

But only a mother and baby lie there.

Ave Maria, Ave Maria:

Hear the soft lullaby the angel hosts sing.

Ave Maria, Ave Maria:

Maiden, and mother of Jesus our King.

Where are his courtiers, and who are his people?

Why does he bear neither scepter nor crown?

Shepherds his courtiers, the poor for his people,

With peace as his scepter and love for his crown.

What though your treasures are not gold or incense?

Lay them before him with hearts full of love.

Praise to the Christ child, and praise to his mother

Who bore us a Savior by grace from above.

EIGHTH LESSON

Luke 2:15-18

*Hymn #173                                  O Come, All Ye Faithful

NINTH LESSON

       John 1:1-14

       Anthem:                      O Holy Night          Adolphe Adam

                                          Elizabeth Mahowald, soloist

O holy night the stars are brightly shining
It is the night of our dear Savior's birth
Long lay the world in sin and error pining
Till He appeared and the soul felt its worth

A thrill of hope the weary world rejoices
For yonder breaks a new glorious morn

Fall on your knees
O hear the angels' voices
O night divine
O night when Christ was born
O night divine o night
O night divine

* CONFESSION OF FAITH:

Belgic Confession, Article 17

We believe that our good God,
by marvelous divine wisdom and goodness,

seeing that Adam and Eve had plunged themselves
into both physical and spiritual death
and made themselves completely miserable,

set out to find them, though they, trembling all over,

were fleeing from God.

And God comforted them,
promising to give them his Son,

born of a woman,

to crush the head of the serpent,
and to make them blessed.

OFFERING OURSELVES AND OUR GIFTS

       Offertory           Infant Holy, Infant Lowly Gerre Hancock

Infant Holy, Infant Lowly - for his bed a cattle stall;

Oxen lowing, little knowing Christ the Babe is Lord of all.

Swift are winging angels singing, Nowells ringing,

Tidings bringing, Christ the Babe is Lord of all.

Flocks were sleeping, shepherds keeping vigil till the morning new;

Saw the glory, heard the story, tidings of a gospel true.

Thus rejoicing, free from sorrow, praises voicing, greet the morrow,

Christ the Babe was born for you!

*CAROL                    O Come, All Ye Faithful      Hymn No.173

THE TABLEAU OF THE NATIVITY OF CHRIST

Inspired by the Children and Worship story approach, the Tableau of the Nativity was developed to tell the story of Jesus’ birth.  The style of the readings and the “wondering” questions are similar to the Children and Worship stories, except that in the tableau, people rather than wooden figures help to tell the story.

A READING

Once in a time, a long time ago, God determined to

show LOVE to the world, in a way never before shown.

The showing of God’s Love is called CHRISTMAS!

It is a wonderful story!

It is a mystery which unfolds before our eyes!

Today we hear it told again, for us, here,

in this place said to be Holy,

because we are here and God is here, with us,

as together we go to Bethlehem.

THE CAROL       O Little Town of Bethlehem (v.1)           Hymn No.155

A READING

The story begins with the prophets.

Prophets listen to God and are messengers for God.

A long time ago, ISAIAH was a prophet who listened

and spoke the word of God.

This is what ISAIAH said: listen…

THE PEOPLE WHO WALKED IN DARKNESS HAVE SEE A GREAT LIGHT; THOSE WHO DWELT IN A LAND OF DEEP DARKNESS, ON THEM HAS LIGHT SHINED…FOR TO US A CHILD IS BORN…

The prophets said that the Christ of God would be born to a young woman.

His name would mean, GOD WITH US!

And that all would take place in a little town called Bethlehem.

REFLECTION

I wonder how the prophets listened to God?

I wonder how they knew it was God who spoke?

I wonder if there are still prophets today who can show us the way to Bethlehem?

I wonder what the way to Bethlehem is like?

THE CAROL       O Little Town of Bethlehem (v.3)           Hymn No.155

A READING

God uses other messengers too: they are called ANGELS.

There was an angel, a messenger from God, called Gabriel,

who carried a most important message…from God…

to a young woman whose name was …Mary.

Gabriel told Mary that she was very special to God.

She was the woman who would give birth to a child.

One day he would be called THE CHRIST OF GOD.

REFLECTION

I wonder how angels listen to God?

I wonder if there are still angels who are messengers from God?

I wonder where they are today, and what messages they have for us?

ANTHEM                        Gabriel’s Message            K. Lee Scott

The angel Gabriel from heaven came,

His wings as drifted snow, his eyes as flame;

"All hail,' said he, "thou lowly maiden Mary,

Most highly favored lady," Gloria!

"For known a blessed mother thou shalt be,

All generations laud and honor thee,

Thy son shall be Emmanuel, by seers foretold,

Most highly favored lady," Gloria!

Then gentle Mary meekly bowed her head,

"To me be as it pleaseth God," she said,

"My soul shall laud and magnify his holy name."

Most highly favored lady, Gloria!

Of her Emmanuel, the Christ was born

In Bethlehem, all on a Christmas morn,

And Christian folk throughout the world will ever say:

"Most highly favored lady," Gloria!

A READING

Mary and Joseph, to whom she was engaged, are on their way to Bethlehem.

They hold a great secret in their hearts.

It is the secret of the angel, the one who came to Mary and said:

DO NOT BE AFRAID, MARY! BE JOYFUL!

YOU WILL HAVE GOD’S SPECIAL SON.

YOU WILL NAME HIM JESUS.

That night, a long, long night ago, they were

given shelter in an old barn.

It was filled with the warmth of the animals and

the smell of cattle feed and straw.

It was there that Jesus was born.

REFLECTION

I wonder how Mary felt when an angel spoke to her?

I wonder how Joseph felt?

I wonder what it would be like to have God’s special child, Jesus?

I wonder if they realized how special this night would be?

ANTHEM                               Silent Stars                     Joel Raney

                                      Julia Aiello, soloist

Silent stars flood the earth with light.

Angels' songs gently ring through the night,

singing their lullaby of peace on earth;

sharing the news of the Savior's birth.

There's a song in the air! There's a star in the sky!

There's a mother's deep prayer, and a baby's low cry.

And the star rains its fire while the beautiful sing,

for the manger of Bethlehem cradles a King!

Silent stars brighten the still, still night.

Sweet voices from heaven echo a mother's delight,

singing their lullaby of peace on earth;

sharing the new of the Savior's birth.

We rejoice in the light, and we echo the song

that comes down through the night from the heavenly throng.

And the star rains its fire while the beautiful song,

for the manger of Bethlehem cradles a King!

A READING

There are shepherds in this story.

That long ago night, they were just doing

what shepherds do… KEEPING WATCH OVER THEIR SHEEP,

PROTECTING AND CARING FOR THEM.

The shepherds have good news to tell.

Another angel, another messenger from God, came to them, out there, in the fields and said:

DO NOT BE AFRAID! BE JOYFUL!

TODAY, A SAVIOR, GOD’S SPECIAL CHILD, IS BORN IN BETHLEHEM.  YOU WILL FIND HIM LYING IN A MANGER, IN A CATTLE FEEDBOX, ALL TUCKED IN WITH CLOTHS TO KEEP HIM WARM AND SAFE.

REFLECTION

I wonder what the shepherds felt when an angel spoke to them?

I wonder how they felt on the way to Bethlehem?

THE CAROL                   Away in a Manger

                                            Junior Choir

A READING

Today we come to the manger’s side, offering our gifts; our time, our service, even our very lives.

But the promise of Christmas has never been the gifts we bring, even the gifts we give to God.

The promise of Christmas is God’s gift to us;

The gift of HOPE AND JOY, PEACE AND LOVE,

JUSTICE AND MERCY.

When the child grew up and became all that God

intended him to be, he said:

I AM THE LIGHT OF THE WORLD,

WHOEVER FOLLOWS ME WILL NOT WALK IN DARKNESS,

BUT WILL HAVE THE LIGHT OF LIFE.

THE CAROL       Angels We Have Heard on High             Hymn No.152

A READING

God’s glory now, is kindled gentler than low candlelight under the rafter of a barn;

Eternal peace is sleeping in the hay.

And wisdom is born in secret

in a straw roofed stable.

Liturgical Color: Blue

You may notice that this year our paraments for Advent are blue. While the traditional liturgical color for Advent is purple, over the past few decades there has been a growing interest to use blue. In the past, we have used purple for both Advent and Lent, signifying that both of these seasons are times of preparation in the life of the church. The use of blue has been in part to distinguish Advent and Lent from one another. In Advent, we are preparing for the birth of Jesus in Bethlehem and the return of Jesus in the future, at which time he will restore all of creation and make all things new. Thus, this season of Advent is full of hope.

We are so grateful for the gift of these paraments from Messiah Lutheran Church and thankful for Ginny Chan's work in modifying them to fit our space.

Let me hear what God the LORD will speak,

For God will speak peace to his people, to his faithful, to those who turn to him in their hearts.
Steadfast love and faithfulness will meet; righteousness and peace will kiss each other.
Faithfulness will spring up from the ground, and righteousness will look down from the sky.
Surely his salvation is at hand for those who fear him, that his glory may dwell in our land.

Come, Lord Jesus, our light and life.

Until that day, let us walk in the light of the Lord.

PRAYER OF CONFESSION

Lord Christ, we confess our willingness to be loved but also our reluctance to love.

We confess that we are full of good intentions but weak at keeping promises.

O God, we live as if the light had never defeated the darkness in the world or in us; we ignore the Christ you sent to live among us.

(Silent Prayers of Confession)

ANTHEM:                     Christ the Appletree     Sanford E. Scriven

The tree of life my soul hath seen,

laden with fruit and always green;

The trees of nature fruitless be,

Compared with Christ the appletree.

This beauty doth all things excel,

By faith I know, but ne'er can tell

The Glory which I now can see,

in Jesus Christ the appletree.

For happiness I long have sought,

and pleasure dearly I have brought;

I missed of all, but now I see

'Tis found in Christ the appletree.

This fruit doth make my soul to thrive,

it keeps my dying faith alive;

which makes my soul in haste to be

with Jesus Christ the Appletree.

I'm wear'd with my former toil,

here I will sit and rest a while;

under the shadow I will be,

of Jesus Christ the appletree.

SERMON                   Our Only Comfort      Rev. Blaine Crawford

* CONFESSION OF FAITH:           The Heidelberg Catechism Q&A 1

Q. What is your only comfort in life and in death?

A. That I am not my own, but belong—body and soul, in life and in death—to my faithful Savior, Jesus Christ.

He has fully paid for all my sins with his precious blood,
and has set me free from the tyranny of the devil.
He also watches over me in such a way
that not a hair can fall from my head
without the will of my Father in heaven;
in fact, all things must work together for my salvation.

Because I belong to him, Christ, by his Holy Spirit, assures me of eternal life and makes me wholeheartedly willing and ready from now on to live for him.

OFFERING OURSELVES AND OUR GIFTS

       Offertory:      Prepare the Way of the Lord   William Rowan

Prepare, prepare the way of the Lord!

Prepare the way! Make straight his path.

Every valley shall be exalted,

every hill made low;

and the crooked shall be made straight,

and the rough places plain.

And the Glory of the Lord,

shall be revealed.

And all mankind shall see it,

shall see it together.

Prepare, prepare the way of the Lord!

Prepare the way! Make straight his path.
