PRELUDE: Deborah Im

SALUTATION AND ANNOUNCEMENTS

* PASSING OF THE PEACE

* GLORIA PATRI (pew card)

* CALL TO WORSHIP Dorien Day

Out of the depths I cry to you, O LORD.

Lord, hear my voice! Let your ears be attentive to the voice of my supplications!

If you, O LORD, should mark iniquities, Lord, who could stand?

But there is forgiveness with you, so that you may be revered.

I wait for the LORD, my soul waits, and in his word I hope;

My soul waits for the Lord more than those who watch for the morning, more than those who watch for the morning.

O Israel, hope in the LORD!

For with the LORD there is steadfast love, and with God is great power to redeem.

* HYMN No. 130 O for a Thousand Tongues to Sing

PRAYER OF CONFESSIONSarah White

God of mercy, you sent Jesus Christ to seek and save the lost. We confess that we have strayed from you and turned aside from your way. We are misled by pride, for we see ourselves pure when we are stained and great when we are small. We have failed in love, neglected justice, and ignored your truth. Have mercy, O God, and forgive our sin.

 (Silent Prayers of Confession)

Lord, have mercy.

Christ, have mercy. Lord, have mercy. Amen.

ASSURANCE OF PARDON Sarah White

Romans 8:10-11

But if Christ is in you, though the body is dead because of sin, the Spirit is life because of righteousness. If the Spirit of him who raised Jesus from the dead dwells in you, he who raised Christ from the dead will give life to your mortal bodies also through his Spirit that dwells in you.

SUMMARY OF THE LAW Sally Ann Castle

Galatians 5:22-23

The fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, generosity, faithfulness, gentleness, and self-control. There is no law against such things.

Herein is wisdom.

Glory be to God.

JUNIOR SERMON Jeanne Sarran

ANTHEM:  Lord, It Belongs Not to My Care Carl Schalk

Lord, it belongs not to my care
whether I die or live:
to love and serve thee is my share,
and this thy grace must give.

Christ leads me through no darker rooms
than he went through before;
he that into God's kingdom comes
must enter by this door.

Come, Lord, when grace hath made me meet
thy blessed face to see;
for if thy work on earth be sweet,
what will thy glory be!

Then shall I end my sad complaints
and weary, sinful days,
and join with the triumphant saints
that sing my Saviour's praise.

My knowledge of that life is small,
the eye of faith is dim;
but 'tis enough that Christ knows all,
and I shall be with him.

SCRIPTURE READINGS: Dorien Day

Ezekiel 37:1-14 p. 704

John 11:1-45 p. 873

OFFERING OURSELVES AND OUR GIFTS

Offertory:      Into the Woods My Master Went arr. Phil Hall

Into the woods my Master went,
Clean forspent, forspent,
Into the woods my Master came,
Forspent with love and shame.
But the olives they were not blind to Him.
The little grey leaves were kind to Him,
The thorn tree had a mind to Him,
When into the woods He came.

Out of the woods my Master came
And he was well content;
Out of the woods my Master came,
Content with death and shame.
When death and shame would woo Him last,
From under the trees they drew Him last,
’Twas on a tree they slew Him—last
When out of the woods He came.

My constant friend is He:

I sing because I’m free;
For His eye is on the sparrow,
And I know he watches me.

SALUTATION AND ANNOUNCEMENTS

* CALL TO WORSHIP        Nancy Gessner

Praise the LORD! Blessed are those who fear the LORD, who greatly delight in his commandments.

They rise in the darkness as a light for the upright; they are gracious, merciful, and righteous.

It is well with those who deal generously and conduct their affairs with justice.

For the righteous will never be moved; they will be remembered forever.

They are not afraid of evil tidings; their hearts are firm, secure in the LORD.

Their hearts are steady, they will not be afraid; God’s righteousness and steadfast love will endure forever.

* HYMN No. 776        Let Us Break Bread Together

PRAYER OF CONFESSION

God, you placed us in the world to be its salt.

We are afraid of committing ourselves, afraid of being stained by the world. We do not want to hear what “they” might have to say, and our salt dissolves as if in water. Forgive us, Jesus.

God, you placed us in the world to be its light.

We are afraid of the shadows, afraid of poverty. We do not want to know other people’s struggles, and our light slowly fades away. Forgive us, Jesus.

God, you placed us in the world to live in community.

We are afraid to share in life with others and afraid to struggle for the dignity and justice of others. Forgive us, Jesus.

 (Silent Prayers of Confession)

Yea, though I walk through the valley of the shadow of death, I will fear no evil; for Thou art with me.

Thou preparest a table before me in the presence of my enemies: Thou anointest my head with oil; my cup runneth over surely goodness, goodness and mercy shall follow me all the days of my life; The Lord is my shepherd I shall not want.
