Lawrence Eisman has been director of the Queens College Choral Society since 1977; he began his association with the Society in 1951 as a student trombonist performing in Handel's Messiah in the College orchestra. Following his appointment to the music faculty in 1962, he served as assistant to John Castellini, the Choral Society's founder and director, who was also his conducting teacher and mentor.

Under Dr. Eisman's direction, the Society has performed masterworks by such composers as Bach, Bernstein, Brahms, Handel, Haydn, Mozart, and Orff, as well as the premieres of works written by colleagues at Queens College's Aaron Copland School of Music: Kaddish, by Joel Mandelbaum, written for the College's 50th Anniversary, and Psalterium Davidicum, a recent work by Allen Brings. Over the years the Choral Society has expanded its off-campus activities, performing in churches and community centers in addition to its annual fall and spring concerts at Colden Center for the Performing Arts.

A noted author, lecturer, and conductor in the field of secondary school music, Dr. Eisman is the director of the Center for Preparatory Studies in Music, a pre-college program for young musicians aged four to seventeen, sponsored by the Aaron Copland School of Music.
